    Featureset Differences - Version for 4.11x and 6.x vs. 7.x

    @Markus

    Are you supporting 4.11x and 6.x w/essentially the same capabilities as version 7.x of Umbraco. Do you have any plans to discontinue support of prior versions and cap the addition of new features for them?

    Hi!

    Thank you for looking at the package!

    They have basicly the same features at the moment.

    We will still do bugfixes and may include new core features for releases for the V4-6 version but the biggest work will be on the V7-version going forward.

    I appreciate your candor. However, I do hope you will continue to add new features to versions 4 and 6 that each is capable of supporting. This is a package that costs $161 USD. It's not an insignificant cost for an Umbraco package. I can appreciate that version 7 has new features that are only applicable to it. I don't know the the version percentages, but I would guess that version 7 has only a minority of total installations. So in some ways this is like a vendor only supporting Windows 8 in terms of new features. The CMS market for Umbraco is pretty miniscule to begin with, only 2/10% of 1% of all CMS users. It seem like you would want to support a majority of users.

    Hi again Richard!

    At the moment I think that the Newsletter Studio-package has a really good set of features both for the V4-6 and theV7-targeted versions (basically the same feature set). Like I answered we will of course add bug fixes and maybe also new features (where it makes sense) to the V4-6 version. We will maintain the V4-6 version until our clients stops to use it but we will put the biggest development efforts in to the V7-version in the future as this is where the community is moving.

    Last week at CodeGarden14 the Umbraco HQ announced that a majority of the new Umbraco-installs are now V7-installs. Since the Umbraco HQ is putting V4-6 in “maintenance mode” this is what we will do with the V4-6 version of the Newsletter Studio-package (http://umbraco.com/follow-us/blog-archive/2014/4/28/what-are-we-up-to.aspx). But, like I stated, the feature set of the current version I really strong and we’re never “closing the door” – if we see a lot of customers wanting a feature in the V4-6 version we will of course consider adding it.

    So to be clear – there is a really good version of Newsletter Studio for Umbraco V4-6 and this version will be maintained and may also be improved if that’s what our clients want.

    Please don’t hesitate to get back to me with further questions or feedback.

    Sincerely / Markus
