In V8 this is done automatically based on language variants, in V7 or other implementations there is no standard so you need to set them yourself.

Thanks, we are using V8 but not the meta-tagging function. Is there a way just to display hreflang tags in a template and no other SEO checker code?
It will render the other tags as well, not sure why you have disabled that since it will give you default properties out of the box as well.
But you can just loop over the languages in that case and render the url for each other language to generate the correct hreflang urls.
